RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
