European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
