In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
