Our Top Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Spot.

On the surface, this work may look closer to an arduous university examination rather than the latest pop album from an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided into 4 different parts and sung in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical change, frequently via the lens of various saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward on this record, supported by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a long list of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the work of other artists look quite modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That this album succeeds in transcend dry academic posturing feels almost a miracle, and complete credit belonging to the artist. While it's not her first project to blend the past and the present, the ambitions feel far greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more pronounced. What truly raises her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk at her height, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless want to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

That playful spirit shines clearly on the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral surge thuds in with cartoonish impact. The song then shifts to the wild track featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never quite understand—nor want to know—where it will go next."

Nearly every track concludes in a completely different place than how it started. One moment examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a delicate orchestration before collapsing in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins out moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

A key achievement of the album is navigating the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. One track performed primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks as it spirals upward. That feat gets echoed by a different powerful track that grows and constricts, weaving layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a sharp smile, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes patience to completely mine but never seem like a chore. While some major pop albums of the year felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the characters at it, some tipsy on holy wine, flit between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
