Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
