TikTok Grants Users Authority to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform announced that it currently hosts in excess of 1 bn AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread launch. This shift aligns with a rise in AI content, driven by new AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost 10% of the quickest rising channels on a popular video site exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this material is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or surreal.

Our research shows that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, including digital art to science explainers, and we want to give people the ability to see more or less of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its app tagged as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 m media items are uploaded to the service each day, making AI content a minor portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Users will be able to decrease or raise the level of AI content they see by opening the content preference option in the app and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be modified under the setting include politics, clothing, cosmetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its policies mandate content makers to label lifelike AI-made content, and it bans malicious deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

In addition, the platform will now add an “AI-made” label to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting content made by AI. This measure is intended to help prevent users from attempting to circumvent the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is furthermore establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and institutions to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will assist charitable organizations focused on educating computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has defended its content review process, following discussion over proposals to make redundant numerous safety staff in the UK. It is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A company official explained that human moderation would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content before it is viewed by humans. TikTok announced a notable drop in shocking and graphic content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
