Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
